Neurodermatitis
Neurodermatitis is a hair and scalp disease in which the skin becomes swollen and particularly itchy. This condition begins as a localized area of itching on the scalp that seems normal but the itchy part can extend as well as become more irritating. Neurodermatitis is one of the many types of dermatitis known as lichen simplex and it usually occurs in adult women.
For some unusual reason it usually occurs in the middle top of the scalp or at the back of the hairline. Constant rubbing and scratching of the area may lead to hair breakage and thickening and darkening of the skin may lead to another condition called lichen simplex chronicus. This very itchy and severe hair and scalp disease can be very difficult to stop and medical treatment with cortisone injections, topical prescription products and oral anti-itch medication can control and give relief to the itching problem. When the itching stops, the hair can begin to grow again in the part of the scalp that is affected and usually it will take 6 to 12 months to get back to normal.
Since neurodermatitis is caused by anything that causes itching, it can be linked to allergies and can crop up when the skin is more responsive to certain substances. It can also be linked to psoriasis, an insect bite, using very tight clothing and anything that may cause the skin to dry. Diagnosing neurodermatitis can be confusing because of its symptoms may be similar to symptoms of other hair and scalp diseases. A diagnosis of a specialist in allergies and skin condition such as a dermatologist or an allergist may be needed for proper diagnosing and treatment.
